I've got an external hard drive that I just can't seem to rename, no matter what I've tried. I've already run the command prompt and used chkdsk to repair it, and I've also gone into the drive's properties in an attempt to change the name. It works fine, but it's really frustrating to see the wrong name every time. I've searched online for solutions, but nothing seems to work. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? It sounds like you’ve been pretty thorough already! One thing you might want to try is reassigning the drive letter. Sometimes, Windows won’t let you rename it if there’s a conflict. Just go to Disk Management, right-click your drive, and select 'Change Drive Letter and Paths.' If that doesn’t work, a quick format might help, but keep in mind that this will erase your data. Make sure to back it up first!
Have you tried renaming it while in Safe Mode? Sometimes background processes can cause issues with file names. Boot up in Safe Mode and see if you can change the name then. It worked for me once when I had a similar issue!
I haven't tried that yet, but I will! Thanks for the tip!
This is a great point! I had a similar issue, and changing the drive letter did the trick for me.
