Hey everyone! I'm at a crossroads trying to decide which path to take for my first rotation in a company's development program. My first choice is Data Science, and after chatting with the manager, it seems focused on data modeling, presentations, and using Python. There's also a different team handling algorithms. I really enjoyed working with data back in high school, especially in stats, which makes me excited about this option. But I've heard some drawbacks too, like it might be boring or considered a 'dead-end' job unless I pursue a PhD later on.
My second option is DevOps. I like that I can be either more technical or functional here, working with Java, Python, and tools like Git. However, there are concerns that DevOps might also be seen as a 'dead-end' role, but I could gain a lot of valuable experience. The program allows for two rotations, spending a full year with a team, so I'd start with either Data Science or DevOps this year and switch to something else next year. I'd love to hear your thoughts and any advice you might have. Thanks!

You might want to consider combining both worlds with something like MLOps. It blends data science principles with DevOps practices and could provide a more dynamic experience.
What company are you at? It sounds awesome to have a development track! I'm looking for something similar.
If you go with the DevOps path, make sure there are good mentors on your team. It can be a challenging role, especially since many people transition into it from development or sysadmin roles. Having support is essential to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
Those two fields are quite different! Data Science typically requires a Master's to progress long-term, while you can advance in DevOps without needing advanced degrees, which might ease your decision.
