Choosing Between RTX 5060 and RX 9060 XT for Indie Game Dev

Hey everyone! 👋 I'm a budding solo game developer from India and I'm working on my first proper PC setup for making indie horror games. My project involves medium-level 3D work and atmospheric environments, mainly using Unity. I'm currently at a crossroads with my GPU choice and would love some insights from those experienced in game development. The options I'm considering are the NVIDIA RTX 5060 with 8 GB of VRAM and the AMD RX 9060 XT which has 16 GB of VRAM. I've found that the RTX 5060 offers some great features like CUDA, OptiX support, and better rendering speeds in Blender, but the RX 9060 XT's 16 GB VRAM seems crucial for handling larger textures and complex scenes in Unity. My total budget for this build, including a monitor, is around $941, but I could stretch it to about $1066 if it's really worthwhile. Do you think going with the AMD graphics card is reliable enough for indie game dev? Is the extra VRAM worth more than the NVIDIA features for real-time game development? And as a solo beginner, should I risk giving up CUDA/OptiX, or will that be a mistake down the line? Any advice would be super helpful! Thanks!

I'd recommend going with NVIDIA. Their features definitely outweigh the lower VRAM. I found through Blender benchmarking that my A770 outperformed the RX 9060 XT, and the RTX 5060 should be even better. Plus, don't expect AMD to catch up regarding driver support for creative software, so NVIDIA is the safer bet overall.

You should lean towards the RX 9060 XT. It offers much more power, especially with its 16 GB VRAM, which is crucial for large Unity projects. Spending around $442 for the RX 9060 XT is a solid investment given your needs.

If you are considering more than just gaming, I'd say go for NVIDIA. They just have better overall support for the type of software you’re planning to use.
