I'm curious about how the RTX 5070 performs at 1440p compared to the RTX 5080 at 4K. I'm currently using a system with a 5080, a 9800X3D, and 64GB of DDR5, but I'm considering building a second PC elsewhere. I'm thinking of going with a 5070 for that setup along with a 1440p monitor since I also have 32GB of DDR4 available (4x8GB). Does it make sense to go with an AM4 platform? And will there be a noticeable difference between my current 9800X3D and a 5800X?

The RTX 5070 is quite a bit slower than the 5080, especially at 4K. It might be around 40% faster at 1440p compared to the 5080 at 4K. So, for example, you could expect something like 100fps at 1440p with the 5070 versus about 65fps at 4K with the 5080. Just keep in mind that the frame rates can vary a lot based on the game and settings you use.
I think going for the 9070XT is smart, especially since you already have DDR4 RAM. The extra cost is typically worth it for the performance increase. If you're mostly gaming, a 5800X3D shouldn't hold you back significantly, but check the prices first since AM4 CPUs can be pricier now.
Be careful, though; AM4 X3D processors are getting hard to find without paying way more than they’re worth. You might want to explore the second-hand market.
I'm not sure why you’d compare those resolutions, as both GPUs kind of target different performance levels. However, if you're considering the 5080 for 4K, it should handle it better than the 5070.*
If the 5080 isn’t considered a "4K GPU," what would be? Are only the latest models like the 4090 and 5090 suitable for that?
With your 9800X3D setup, you're already getting solid performance. But if you're looking to go cheaper with a 9070XT, that could be a good middle ground since it has 16GB of VRAM and performs well enough for gaming. It's slower in ray tracing tasks compared to the 5070 Ti, but offers a reasonable boost in regular performance. Also, if you just game and don’t do much productivity work, you’ll be okay sticking to AMD. But if you want maximum performance for the price, consider a 7600X, as it's a great option without breaking the bank.
Actually, AMD's video encoding has improved a lot with their recent architectures. If you're not doing heavy encoding tasks daily, you shouldn't notice much difference now.

How do you test this out? What's the method to determine the 5080's performance at 1440p?
