Concerns About Notepad++ Version and Possible Compromise

I don't have Notepad++ installed personally, but back in December, I mentioned it to my friends and sibling. My sibling isn't home often, so he didn't respond to my post. Today, while checking his PC, I noticed he had Notepad++ version 8.8.3 installed from July 17, 2025. I was confused because I found an installer in his downloads folder for version 8.8.2, which was downloaded the same day as the version 8.8.3 install, even though 8.8.3 had already been released. I checked the SHA256 checksum of the installer, and it matches the official one from GitHub. I also learned that Notepad++ doesn't check for updates until 15 days after installation, yet it seems like it updated to 8.8.3 even though he only downloaded it on July 17. I searched for any signs of an auto-update in his temp files but found nothing. Should I be worried about any security issues here?

If you didn't find anything suspicious on the machine, you might not need to worry. I would recommend uninstalling that version and installing the minimum recommended version instead just to be safe.

Honestly, what are you worried about? The version you mentioned was possibly outdated, but if there hasn't been any signs of compromise, you should be okay.

From what I've read, they had access from September to December, and the last potentially bad version is 8.8.8, while the current one is 8.9.1. Since your friend last updated in July last year, he should be fine. Still, it's a good idea to upgrade to the latest version, as they’ve added extra security checks.
