Could Both M.2 Slots on My Motherboard Be Dead?

Hey everyone, I woke up today to find that my PC booted directly into BIOS instead of Windows. After checking the boot options, I noticed that the only recognized drive is my HDD, which I only use for photos and documents. Unfortunately, neither of my NVMe drives is showing up at all. It's hard to believe that both SSDs would fail simultaneously, so I'm reaching out for some help. My motherboard is an ASRock X570m Pro4 Micro ATX. Both drives were working perfectly fine just last night before I went to sleep.

I'm no expert, but usually one M.2 slot connects through the motherboard chip while the other connects directly to the CPU. So if a spill or physical damage isn't involved, it's pretty rare for both to fail at the same time.

You’re correct. One is tied into the CPU, and one goes through the PCH. I've seen SATA controllers fail and cause boot issues, but NVMe is a different beast.

Just a frustrating situation since it seems like both drives failing at the same time is equally unlikely.

It might not be as unlikely as you think. I've experienced faulty M.2 ports, and in those cases, both were dead. I’d recommend testing the drives in a different system to confirm if they work. If they do, it’s definitely a motherboard issue. Good luck!

I’d suggest removing the drives one by one to see if the BIOS detects either one. You could also try each drive in both slots to check for detection issues. Sometimes it’s just a matter of reseating them!

I'll give that a shot.

Tried swapping the drives to both slots with no luck. Looks like a new motherboard will be in my future.
