I recently set up my new iPhone 17 Pro Max by transferring data from my old iPhone 17 Pro Max. I was at home with both phones connected to WiFi and used the setup wizards to perform the transfer. After transferring some data via WhatsApp and Signal, I noticed my cellular data plan had dropped from 150GB to just 25GB, which seemed impossible. It felt like I lost around 125GB just by switching phones. I later found out that my cellular plan reverted back to 150GB after some time, leading me to wonder if I mistakenly used cellular data during this process or if it was just a glitch on my provider's end. Can anyone shed some light on this?

people keep insisting that it uses wifi, i have extremely strong internet connection, fiber, 1000mbps some of the best you can get, and it did maybe 10% of the transfer on my wifi on a different screen with an apple logo then restarted my phone, switched the connection for wifi off BOTH of my phones and doesnt let me leave the screen without wiping what ive already transferred and resetting my new phone, stupid design flaws considering the ai and other crap this new stuff is supposed to have and my wifi didnt "hiccup" the phones coding just sucks, now its also 10x slower on my celluar data using data i dont want it to use and i have no options of stopping it other than restarting where ill end up in the same spot, dumb asf, also i read people saying they used like 100 gbs of data and other orangutans trying to convince them it was some mysterious accident and not the obvious transfer of 100gbs of data on the apple site so it sounds like this happens to most people and the company is coping, did your ai code the phone for you ? lol if not maybe it should cuz this is wild in 2026 crap effects with crap acknowledgment of malfunctions, we have the technology and know how for this to not happen and i bet it doesnt on a lot of other phones
Nope! When transferring between iPhones, the data should only move over Bluetooth and WiFi, which is why they need to be close. There's no way that transfer alone could use up so much cellular data.
It sounds like you might not have had a stable WiFi connection during the transfer. Normally, it should connect to WiFi automatically, but if there was any hiccup, it might have defaulted to cellular for some tasks.
I was already on WiFi before transferring my eSIM, so I doubt there was an issue with connecting.
