Did I get scammed with my new Samsung 990 Pro SSD?

I recently purchased a Samsung 990 Pro SSD on eBay, and everything seemed fine at first. After installing Samsung Magician to clone my old SSD, I noticed neither of my drives were recognized as 'authentic' by the software, but I didn't think much of it. Once I installed the new SSD, I ran a benchmark test, and the results were surprisingly low—only 4,300 MB/s for both read and write speeds. I attempted to check for firmware updates, but when I tried the ISO flashing mode, it said no supported SSDs were detected for the firmware update. In Samsung Magician, it shows the drive with a firmware version 'SN250707,' which doesn't match any of the usual versions. I'm starting to wonder if I got scammed. What are my options? I've tried several NVMe drivers to no avail. Cheers!

It sounds pretty likely that you might have been scammed. I recommend using a disk verification tool to check the actual size of the SSD. Some counterfeit drives use memory controllers that fake their size, which could be why you're seeing odd performance. Just to clarify, when you mention 4.300, are you referring to 4.3 Gbps?

Glad to hear the H2testw is showing the correct capacity! Just a heads up, you'll likely need the product code for warranty registration. You might have to open your laptop to find it.

Yeah, I'm talking about 4.3 Gbps. I’m running an H2testw right now, and so far, it seems to be showing the correct capacity. I'll check additional details in Crystal Disk Info to be sure.

If Samsung Magician is saying your SSD isn't genuine, that's definitely a red flag. It could indicate that it's a counterfeit product or an OEM drive that isn’t meant for resale. Typically, OEM drives don’t receive firmware updates via Samsung Magician; they require the OEM for support.
