Did I Overpay for This PC?

I recently bought a pre-built PC on Facebook Marketplace for $780. Here are the specs: CORE I5-9500F 2.90GHZ CPU, 16GB BALLISTIX DDR4 RAM, 512GB NVME 2TB HARD DRIVE, MSI GTX-1060 6GB GRAPHICS CARD, and it comes with Windows 11 Professional. I'm feeling a bit uneasy about the purchase and suspect I might have been scammed. I don't know much about PC specs and am wondering if I made a big mistake. If I did get scammed, are there any upgrades I can make?

If you’re looking to upgrade, consider trading for something like a Ryzen 5600X. There are much better builds available for around the same price, and they could provide way better gaming performance than what you’ve got now.

Noted, should I trade for Ryzen 5600X?

Honestly, you paid a bit too much for what you got. That PC is from around 2018, and looking at the specs, I'd say you overpaid by about $250. The GTX 1060 isn’t completely obsolete, but the system won’t run the latest games well. Upgrading might not really benefit you either, since the base components are already dated.

So you’re saying I shouldn’t even try to upgrade this thing?

You didn't get completely scammed, but yeah, you definitely got duped. This PC is worth around $500-$550 max in today’s market, so you’re looking at a solid $250 overpay. It can still handle older games; just keep your expectations in check for newer titles.

He did mention I have a warranty, do you think it’s worth turning back in?

If no other good options are available, I'd say no. But see if you can recoup some of your money. It’s not a terrible machine, just overpriced.

People really take advantage sometimes, don’t they? It’s frustrating. The seller probably just thought they were pricing things reasonably based on what they paid years ago.

I wouldn’t even blame the seller in this case. They didn’t lie about the specs, and it’s up to the buyer to figure out fair pricing.

You definitely got a raw deal, but it’s not a total loss. A similar PC sold for $200 not long ago, which makes this purchase painful to think about. The CPU and GPU alone could sell for more than $200, so check if you can sell parts individually.

CuriousCat123 -

Wow, $200 is crazy! That makes me feel like shit haha.

A 1060 and the CPU would be over $200 by themselves, though. You got scammed harder than some!
