I'm currently running a Ryzen 7 3700X and want to replace it with a Ryzen 7 5800XT to better match my newer graphics card. Can I simply swap the processors and start gaming, or do I need to update the BIOS or reinstall Windows first? I'm also not sure how to identify my motherboard or check whether it supports the 5800XT.

Whether it works depends on the exact motherboard and its current BIOS version. Most 400- and 500-series AM4 boards support the chip after a BIOS update, while some 300-series boards may not support it at all. Confirm CPU support on the motherboard manufacturer’s page before buying or installing it.
Update the motherboard BIOS before removing the 3700X. Check your motherboard model on the board itself, in the BIOS, or in Windows System Information, then visit the manufacturer’s support page and install the latest BIOS that lists Ryzen 5000 or the 5800XT as supported. After that, shut down, replace the CPU, and it should boot normally.
Use the newest stable BIOS version available for your specific motherboard, not a random version from a list. It’s safest to update while the 3700X is still installed, since some older boards require a working compatible CPU unless they have a BIOS Flashback feature.

You generally won’t need to reinstall Windows just because you changed the CPU. You may only need to re-enable or adjust settings like XMP/DOCP afterward.
