Do I need a new PSU for my RX 7800 XT?

I'm considering whether I need to buy a new power supply unit (PSU) for my setup. I initially bought an MSI A650BN PSU, thinking it would pair well with an RX 5700 XT. However, I've switched gears and decided to get an RX 7800 XT instead. The issue is that the RX 7800 XT has a requirement for a 700-watt PSU, but my current one is only 650 watts. For reference, I'm using a Ryzen 5 5500 CPU. Should I upgrade my PSU?

I have an 850W PSU for my RX 7800 XT and a Ryzen 7 7800X3D. The 7800 XT can easily draw over 300W, especially if you overclock, so I think upgrading to a higher wattage PSU might be a smart move to prevent any future issues.

You should be fine with a 650W PSU for the RX 7800 XT and your Ryzen 5 5500, but it’s cutting it close. If you really want to avoid potential issues down the line, I’d recommend considering an upgrade just to have some extra headroom.

To get a more accurate idea, you could plug your components into pcpartpicker and see the estimated wattage. It’s a good idea to have at least 20% more wattage than what’s estimated to ensure stability.
