Do I need any prior knowledge before studying discrete mathematics?

I've been programming as a hobby for a while, working with PHP, C#, and Python. After taking a break, I've started learning Rust and I want to dive deeper into algorithms and data structures. Alongside this, I'm interested in the theoretical side, particularly the math foundations. My math background isn't very strong, but I know the basics like operations, equations, and logic. I want to know if my current skills are enough to start studying discrete mathematics. I also have a book called 'Discrete Mathematics and Applications'—is it suitable for me?

There aren't strict prerequisites for discrete math, so you're fine to start! It's a fresh journey into a different side of math that's not heavily computational.

From my experience, the first discrete math course isn't too complex, but if you move onto advanced topics, you might need a bit more background in algebra, specifically concepts from Algebra 2.

Having a solid grasp of basic concepts like sets, relations, and functions will definitely help. Many textbooks offer a quick refresher, but some just give a brief overview for those already familiar. You might want to skim through the first chapters of your book and see if you can follow along—if not, consider brushing up on those basics first. By the way, there’s a free online textbook that introduces these concepts gently, which you can check out here: [https://discrete.openmathbooks.org/](https://discrete.openmathbooks.org/).
