I'm planning to upgrade my PC with a Radeon RX 9060 XT and a Ryzen 5 9600X. My current system has 16 GB of DDR4-3200 memory, and I'd like to keep costs down if possible. Can I reuse my existing RAM, or will I need to buy DDR5 and a new motherboard? My current processor is a Ryzen 3 1300X.

Your current Ryzen 3 1300X is also an AM4 processor, so an AM4 upgrade may be possible depending on your motherboard and BIOS support. However, the 9600X cannot use DDR4 at all. If you choose the 9600X, DDR5 and an AM5 motherboard are mandatory; there isn’t a cheaper way to keep the existing RAM with that CPU.
The Ryzen 5 9600X uses the AM5 platform, which requires an AM5 motherboard and DDR5 memory. DDR4 cannot be reused with that CPU, so the motherboard, processor, and RAM all need to change for this upgrade.
If keeping costs low is the priority, consider staying on AM4 with a Ryzen 7 5700X3D and your existing DDR4 memory. That could provide a strong gaming upgrade while avoiding the cost of a new motherboard and DDR5. You’ll still want to check motherboard support and BIOS compatibility.
Would a 5700X3D still be a good choice for gaming at 1080p?
