Hey everyone! I recently bought a PRO B650-S WIFI motherboard along with an AMD Ryzen 5 9600x CPU. I came across some info on PC Part Picker and elsewhere stating that I might need to update the motherboard. Is that accurate? If so, what's the best way to update the BIOS if I don't have another compatible CPU? Is it safe to do the update with the Ryzen 5 9600x without risking damage?

Yes, you'll probably need to update the BIOS if the motherboard doesn't come with the latest version, which can be hard to confirm before buying. Fortunately, this motherboard has a BIOS update button on the back that allows you to do the update without a CPU. Just grab the update file on a USB drive, and you should be good to go! Check the manual for instructions on how to use this feature. If it didn’t have this ability, you’d need an older compatible CPU to do the update. Good luck!
Most AM5 motherboards nowadays are designed to support the 9000 series right out of the box. However, if the box only mentions support for 7000/8000 series CPUs, then yes, you'll need to follow the BIOS update process. Just plug in the USB drive with the update file and use the BIOS flash button according to the instructions provided with your motherboard.
When you receive the motherboard, check the box for a 'Ryzen 9000 Ready' label. If it's there, you're all set and won't need an update. If not, you'll have to update it using the BIOS Flash button on the rear I/O, which you can do without installing a CPU. Just make sure you have a USB drive with the right update file on it.
