Do I Need to Use the Command Line for Installing Apps?

I'm wondering if using the command line to install applications is really important for everyday users. I typically download Flatpak apps from the store, and I'm not sure how much difference it makes compared to installing through the command line. I get that the command line offers more control, but for most of my needs—like browsers, office software, and games—does it actually matter? When should I really consider using it instead?

In most cases, both methods achieve the same result since GUI app stores essentially use command line commands behind the scenes. It's all about convenience. If you find using the terminal more efficient, go for it!

For me, it's about speed. Opening a terminal and typing a command takes almost no time compared to navigating through a GUI. If you're dealing with a slow computer or dislike waiting for menus, the command line might be your best bet.

Sometimes it's better to use the terminal, especially if GUI applications run into issues. For instance, I had to upgrade Anki with the terminal because the version in the software manager was too old. While many users just want to get things done without fuss, learning some command line basics can really help in a pinch.

The command line can offer some advantages, like quicker installation and better performance for some tasks. For instance, using the terminal is often faster than waiting for a GUI app to load up. Plus, sometimes you might need to install apps that aren't available in the store, and that's when the command line becomes essential.

Honestly, if you're getting the apps you need through the store, then it doesn't really matter. Just like on Windows, as long as it’s working for you, go with what you prefer. But if you ever run into limitations, the command line might be the way to go.
