Do I Need VoLTE for My Phone with the 3G Shutdown Coming Up?

Hey everyone! I'm feeling really overwhelmed by the conflicting information surrounding the 3G shutdown in Canada and need your advice. Should I be looking for a new phone? I've seen many sources say that I need VoLTE capability, but my provider, Speakout711, sent me an email claiming VoLTE isn't required—just LTE will do. My current phone's compatibility check shows that my IMEI number isn't supported, even though some sites say my device is VoLTE capable, and I can't even find any VoLTE options in the settings. Plus, I've read that certain carriers can limit VoLTE access on specific phone brands. Can anyone help clarify this for my three phones on the Speakout network? Should I panic shop for a new phone by September 1? The phones I'm concerned about are:

1. OnePlus Nord N20 5G
2. Samsung Galaxy Note 9
3. Samsung Galaxy A14 5G

To sum it up for you:

- OnePlus Nord N20 5G: You should be good!
- Samsung Galaxy Note 9: Likely to lose service once the 3G shuts down.
- Samsung Galaxy A14 5G: No worries here, it should be fine too.

So it really looks like you might need to look into alternatives for the Note 9 in particular.

The towers are indeed getting switched off, and if a phone doesn’t at least show a VoLTE symbol, it won't work post-shutdown. VoLTE becoming mandatory isn’t that complicated. As for carriers disabling features, they typically can’t unless there’s a specific reason tied to their service plans or device compatibility.

According to the info on the CRTC website, after the 3G phase-out, you'll need a phone that supports VoLTE for calls. Speakout711 also mentions that your device needs to be 4G LTE capable with VoLTE support in the specified bands. Sounds like VoLTE might genuinely be necessary for staying connected after the shutdown!
