Do I Really Need a Platinum PSU for My RTX 5090 and Ryzen 9 9950X Build?

I'm planning to build a high-performance workstation mainly for 3D rendering, animation, and simulation—definitely no gaming involved. My key components include an RTX 5090 and a Ryzen 9 9950X. I'm trying to decide between two Corsair power supplies: the RM1200x Shift, which is Gold rated, and the HX1200i, which is Platinum rated. Both are known for their reliability and quality, but I'm curious if the extra efficiency and features of the Platinum option are actually necessary for my professional workloads, or if the Gold rated PSU would suffice.

The Platinum rating mainly indicates higher efficiency, which can lead to better quality and performance, especially under heavy loads. However, for your RTX 5090, a 1000W PSU would be adequate; the 1200W just gives you some extra headroom for any sudden spikes in power.

Thanks, that helps clear it up! I thought Platinum was all about efficiency, but wasn't sure if it made a big difference for lengthy 3D workloads. Good to know both would work well. I was leaning towards the RM1200x Shift for the side connectors and ease of cable management—sounds like I won't miss out on anything crucial with the HX1200i!
