I have a home internet setup where I'm using a gateway instead of a traditional router. I'm curious if connecting my device via an ethernet cable to this gateway actually helps improve my internet speed. So far, I haven't noticed any difference in speed, and I'm wondering if there's something more I could do to enhance my connection. What should I be looking into?

Connecting via ethernet is typically faster. Just make sure you’ve actually disabled Wi-Fi when you’re testing the connection. If your device is still connected to Wi-Fi, it might just be using that instead of the ethernet connection. And yeah, if your upload speed only increased by about 3 Mbps, that could be normal depending on your setup.
It might help, but we need more details to really assess the situation. What speed plan are you subscribed to with your ISP? Also, how does your actual speed compare to that? Are you noticing the same slow speeds on other devices connected to the same network? Plus, the distance between your device and the gateway can also play a role.
Also, when you test your speed, make sure you’re testing it on a device that has a decent network interface card (NIC). Sometimes the hardware limitations can bottleneck your speeds too.
Just a heads up, a gateway does function like a router. Generally speaking, wired connections should give you faster speeds compared to wireless. If you’re connected with ethernet but still not seeing any improvements, that’s definitely worth investigating.
