Dolphin and Gwenview Crashing After Updates – Need Help!

I've been using Kubuntu for a few months now and really enjoying it—definitely wish I switched to Linux sooner! However, I encountered a problem after running the latest updates from the system's package manager. Now, Dolphin isn't displaying previews for image files that aren't PNG, and Gwenview crashes whenever I try to open any image file. I spent quite a while trying to resolve the issues, even creating a new user account to check if it was a settings problem, but the issue persists across accounts.

When I launch Gwenview from the command line, it gives several "unresolved mime type" errors along with a segmentation fault. My system specs include an Nvidia GPU and I'm running Wayland, but I'm hesitant to dive into driver updates since they caused problems in the past. I've been generating a lot of images for work, which is making this even more frustrating. Has anyone else faced similar issues, and is there a solution available?

I identified that the crashes were related to the component 'kioslave5', which appears to cause problems when dealing with image files. Someone pointed out that removing the 'kio5-extras' package stops the crashes in Dolphin by disabling image previews, but unfortunately, it doesn't help with Gwenview. It might be worth trying out if you're okay with not having previews for now until a proper fix is released.

That's a good call! I'll give that a try and see if it helps. Thanks for the tip!

I totally feel your pain! I've been dealing with the same issue with both Gwenview and GIMP crashing when trying to load images. I ended up purging and reinstalling those apps, hoping to fix it, but that didn't help. It seems like it has to do with the underlying libraries. I'm considering upgrading from 24.04 LTS to 25.10, which some people suggested might resolve these library conflicts. Hope this helps you too!

I was thinking the same thing for my issues. If you do upgrade, please let us know if it fixes things!

I had the same problem, and upgrading didn't help at all. I think there's something fundamentally broken at the library level.

I've seen similar errors when running Gwenview. It gives a ton of "unresolved mime type" messages. It might just be that the recent updates messed something up. A quick workaround is to uninstall the package that generates thumbnails in Dolphin, but that doesn't fix Gwenview itself. I also logged a bug report about it. Maybe more people will contribute to the discussions there!

That's exactly what I noticed, too! There might be a common bug with the latest updates. Fingers crossed they fix it soon.

If uninstalling the thumbnail generator works, it might be worth doing until they figure out the real issue.
