Fan Replacement and PSU Options for My New Build

I'm making some upgrades to my PC and have a couple of questions. I recently switched my motherboard and have a small Vorago fan with a 3-pin connection that came with my case. Now, I have a spare AMD 4-pin fan. Can I use this 4-pin fan for something other than CPU cooling, like for airflow in the case? Also, my power supply unit (PSU) only has one 4-pin cable for the CPU, and I want to install an MSI GTX 1660 Super graphics card. Is it a good idea to use a Molex to 8-pin adapter for the GPU if I have the free space for it?

You can definitely use that 4-pin fan! They're versatile, so you can use it for case cooling or even on a CPU cooler, as long as you set it up correctly. Just make sure to check your motherboard's fan headers for any settings related to fan speed control, especially since 3-pin and 4-pin fans behave a little differently. 3-pins are usually DC and controlled by voltage, while 4-pins use PWM for speed control. So, just get them plugged in and adjust the settings in the BIOS if needed.

About the PSU situation, I wouldn't risk using an adapter unless you're really sure about how much power your PSU can handle. A good rule of thumb is to have a PSU with at least 400-450W on the 12V rail for a system with a GTX 1660 Super. If your PSU is outdated or low wattage, like it seems to be with that 4-pin connector, it might not be worth the risk to your system to use an adapter. You're better off investing in a new power supply that has the proper connectors.

Using a Molex to 8-pin adapter can work, but it's not ideal. There's a risk your PSU might not be strong enough for the GPU, especially if it has limitations with the current setup. If you can swing it, I'd recommend saving up for a quality PSU that natively supports PCIe connections. It’ll save you headaches down the road!
