Hey everyone! I'm new to the world of homelabbing and self-hosting, so I thought I'd reach out for some advice, tips, and potential pitfalls to watch for as I embark on this journey. I've lurked around and know documentation often holds the answers, but I want to get some insights from you all.
Here's a bit about my setup:
- **Sabertooth X79**
- **Intel Xeon E5-2643**
- **32GB DDR3 RAM @ 1333MHz**
- **6x 2TB Drives**
- **TrueNAS Scale 25.04.0**
My goals include:
- Running media hosting via Jellyfin
- Creating a backup for my primary PC
- Deep storage for my photography (compressing large files)
- Enabling remote access to my TrueNAS web UI, Jellyfin, and file cloud (currently trying to figure out Cloudflare, but it's a bit tricky!)
Is my setup realistic for these tasks? Where should I begin, and are there specific configurations to consider that might hinder progress as I expand? I know this is a pretty broad request—any thoughts and advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Your setup looks solid for what you want to do! That CPU is actually pretty decent for homelabbing, similar to an i7-7700k, and you should be able to run everything you mentioned. Just a heads up though, streaming with Jellyfin could be resource-heavy. You might realistically only handle one 1080p stream offsite without pushing limits—so keep that in mind for remote access! Also, consider enabling XMP in the BIOS to bump your RAM speed to 2133MHz for better performance. Just be aware that with that CPU and six spinning drives, your power consumption might increase your electricity bill a bit!
Haha, the CPU price drop is nuts! I remember when it was expensive. It's awesome that you gathered a bunch of parts for a budget! I love that you're building a "FrankenServer"—sounds like a fun project. Can't wait to see how it turns out!
