Having Trouble with Black Screen Crashes on My 6800XT – Help Needed!

Hey everyone! I've been facing these annoying intermittent black screen crashes with my 6800XT for a few months now, and they seem to be happening more frequently, especially since I installed the BF6-ready AMD driver. Here's what I've gathered so far:

1. The crashes usually result in a sudden black screen and buzzing sound, without any logs or event viewer traces. They happen randomly while gaming, even in low-load situations like lobbies, and vary from once every six hours to multiple times in a short session.

2. I've checked the temperatures, and everything seems fine. I even reapplied thermal paste and installed new thermal pads, which improved my performance metrics. However, I wonder if my DIY efforts could be a factor despite the good readings.

3. I ruled out RAM issues by swapping it with another PC, but that didn't change anything.

4. I also tried using a different GPU (3070 ti), and surprisingly, that PC encountered similar crashes, but worse. The main difference is the power supplies. My PC has a 750W power supply, while the other has a 650W. My hunch is that there might be a problem with power delivery, as the crashes were more frequent on the lower wattage PSU. Oddly enough, undervolting makes things crash more often, but it's hard to pinpoint since the crashes are so random.

5. The only outlier was a BSOD that occurred when switching to PCIE gen3 instead of gen4, where I managed to get a minidump. My analysis suggests it might be tied to some Hyper-VV functions, but even after disabling those features, the main crashes persisted.

So here I am, desperate for any advice on what my next steps should be. I'm coming close to picking out a new GPU, but I'd hate to lose this one without understanding the issue more clearly. Any thoughts or experiences you've had with similar problems? Thanks for reading!

It sounds like your power supply might be the culprit, even though 750W should normally be enough. Your GPU can draw more than its rated 300W under load. A driver update or rolling back could help too, considering the timing of your issues with the new driver. Have you tried that yet?

I just stress-tested the GPU with a power draw test and it survived a session on FurMark without issues. Still can’t simulate those power spikes reliably though. Maybe I’ll try some intense gaming for that.

I’m planning to roll back the drivers soon. It’s a good idea to see if that changes anything since it’s been trouble with both the BF6 driver and this month’s update.
