Hey everyone! I recently built a new PC using both new and used parts, but I've been getting a lot of black screen issues while playing different games like Valorant, Wuthering Waves, and especially Silent Hill 2. The bizarre part is that my PC stays powered on with all the fans running, yet the screen goes completely black. After checking my event logs, I found out that it's showing Event ID 41 errors. To tackle this, I've done various things like factory resetting my PC, updating all the vital drivers, using DDU to clean up old GPU drivers, swapping my RAM sticks, and running multiple tests with Testmem5, Cinebench, and FurMark 3D. I even replaced my Corsair 750W Bronze power supply with an 850W MSI Gold power supply.
While factory resetting and turning off XMP/undervolts seemed to improve the situation a bit, I'm still facing these black screen issues frequently in Silent Hill 2, both when booting the game and even during gameplay. Now, I'm starting to wonder if it might be a problem with my CPU or motherboard. Any help or insights would be greatly appreciated! Here are my PC specs:
- EVGA RTX 3080 XC Ultra w/ Hybrid Kit
- Ryzen 7 5700X
- MSI B550M PRO-VC WIFI
- G.Skill Trident Z RGB 32GB 3600MHz (2x16)
- MSI MAG A850GL PCIE5 Gold Power Supply

It looks like you've been really thorough with troubleshooting! To rule out hardware issues, try taking out parts one at a time to see if it triggers the black screen. Also, finding a specific test that causes the issue consistently can really help narrow things down. For me, the Event ID 41 was linked to a faulty GPU in a similar situation, so it might be worth checking that out too.
Have you tried running the System File Checker (SFC)? It's a quick way to see if there are any corrupt files causing issues.
Yep, I’ve done sfc /scannow, and it came back with no issues. So that's not the problem!
That’s a good approach! Just to add, there was a time when my system restarted randomly just a few minutes after booting without any games running. But it’s interesting that your 3080 worked fine in the other build before. Definitely seems like something might be off in the new setup.
