Heartbroken After Losing Photos from Apple Repair

Hey everyone, I'm feeling really frustrated and sad right now after what happened to my wife's phone at the Apple Store. Her phone completely died and wouldn't turn back on, no matter how long we charged it with good chargers. So, she took it to the Apple Store for repair. They asked her if she had a backup of her data, which she didn't, and she signed a waiver without realizing the risks. When she got her phone back, it was working, but she lost thousands of photos that held precious memories, and it broke her heart to see her so upset. I've never had to repair a phone myself, so I'm not sure what to expect in these situations, but I felt there was a huge lack of communication from the techs. They didn't tell her what exactly was wrong, how they fixed it, or even warn her about the loss of data. It just feels so wrong, you know? I'm left with so many questions and a heavy heart. Has anyone experienced something similar? What can we do to find some peace of mind or maybe recover those lost photos?

It sounds like your wife experienced a major repair where they likely replaced the entire logic board. Unfortunately, that typically leads to data loss, and it's something the technician should have communicated clearly before proceeding. This is definitely a tough situation, but it serves as a good reminder to back up important data regularly—especially when it comes to phones. If your data isn't backed up, you're at risk of losing it altogether, just like you would if the phone was damaged or stolen.

I know this is super disappointing, but remember that backups should be done before anything goes wrong. If she'd had iCloud Photos enabled, she wouldn’t have lost those memories. For next time, make sure to back up data to iCloud or create encrypted backups on a computer before a repair. It could save a lot of heartbreak.

Honestly, this is a pretty common issue when it comes to phone repairs. Apple and other tech companies have been emphasizing the importance of making backups for years. If you had iCloud Photo syncing on, your photos would be safe in the cloud. Definitely something to consider for the future.
