Help! I Might Have Downloaded a Trojan—What Should I Do?

I urgently need advice after accidentally downloading what I think was a trojan from a fake verification site. I immediately closed the process and terminated it with Windows Defender. I've run scans with both Windows Defender and Malwarebytes, and neither has detected anything unusual. However, I'm now experiencing a blurry and streaky display on my laptop. Plus, my CPU usage is higher than normal when I first open Task Manager, but it drops back down within the safe range. Could this be linked to the trojan, or is there another issue? I've deleted the downloaded file, by the way. I'm on a Windows 11 HP ProBook.

Before making any BIOS or disk setup changes, remember to back up your data. It’s always good to test those backups first just in case. I’d suggest checking the FAQ in the techsupport community; they have a ton of useful info that might help you troubleshoot further.

It sounds like you're doing the right things by scanning for malware. High CPU usage right after opening Task Manager can sometimes happen as it loads all the processes. To get a clearer picture of what's really going on, try using a different task manager program. There are some great third-party alternatives that can offer more detailed insights into resource usage.

If you’re really concerned about possible malware, consider running a live CD or USB scan from a reputable antivirus vendor. I know it can be a hassle since you mentioned needing your laptop, but it's one of the safest ways to ensure your system is clean. If you can’t get to one right away, maybe you could try booting into safe mode and running another scan from there.
