Help! I Think My Friend’s Computer Got a Virus

Hey everyone, I need some advice! My friend had her brother download a few games from some really sketchy websites like SteamTools, and now it seems like her whole computer is messed up. About a week later, her files seem to be gone, and she can't even open AutoCAD, which she needs for her work. Her desktop looks strange—it's filled with what looks like encrypted numbers instead of file names, like 100100 or something similar. She tried running an antivirus test, but it claims everything is fine. What can we do to fix this?

Sounds like it's time for a full system reinstall. If you or your friend have a spare USB drive, that should help. Just make sure to save any important data to the drive first if possible. However, if ransomware is involved, you might lose that data anyway.

Yeah, looks like a ransomware infection to me. If backups aren’t available, recovery is pretty much impossible. Check for ransom notes left by the virus—those are usually in text files on the desktop. Trying to find out which virus it is might help you find any available decrypters online. Just be cautious!

It sounds like your friend might be dealing with a cryptovirus. These types of malware can encrypt files like documents and AutoCAD files, making them unusable. If she doesn’t have backups, unfortunately, those files are likely lost. I recommend looking into cryptovirus info to see if that matches what you're seeing.

From what you've described, this seems like a classic case of ransomware. The renamed files and AutoCAD issues are big red flags. First, disconnect the computer from the internet to prevent any further compromises. Avoid using random tools now—this can overwrite potential recovery options. Check for any ransom notes in folders and see if there's a new file extension like .locked or .encrypted. If that doesn’t help, there are services like ID Ransomware that could help identify the issue.
