I'm totally new to Linux and really excited about setting up my own home server. I'm a bit lost on which Linux distribution to go with—I've been considering Debian, but I'm open to suggestions. I also want some guidance on how to secure it since it will be connected to my home network. Any help would be appreciated!

If you'd rather set it and forget it, Debian is definitely a great choice. It's stable and reliable, though there are some more playful distros out there if you want to tinker a bit. Just know some of those require more hands-on management.
Welcome to the fun of home servers! I’m using Proxmox for mine, which is an open-source Linux-based KVM and LXC server. It allows you to manage all your virtual machines through a web browser, which is super convenient. I have different VMs set up for various tasks like ddns and web hosting. Ubuntu is my go-to for most of them, but Proxmox lets you experiment with different OSs easily. Let me know if you have any questions!
Debian and Ubuntu Server are both solid choices for a home server setup. They’re reliable and have great community support, which is helpful when you're starting out. You can’t go wrong with either of them!
Check out OpenMediaVault for setting up your home server. It's designed for NAS solutions and works great for managing your data. Super user-friendly too!
I definitely appreciate the insight! Proxmox sounds interesting. How easy is it to set up different VMs with it?
