Help! I’m Ready to Dive Back into PC Gaming After a Decade – What Should I Build?

Hey everyone! I used to be a passionate gamer about 10 years ago, but life got in the way and I've been out of the game for a while. My last upgrade was probably in 2016 or 2018. Now, I mainly use an M3 Max MacBook Pro for work in videography and music production, but I'm really missing gaming for fun. The Steam Deck looks tempting, but nothing beats the PC gaming experience, right?

Since I'm so out of the loop, I could really use some guidance on building a new rig. My current setup is outdated, and although I love my NZXT Manta case, I'm open to suggestions for upgrades. I'd like to game at 4K, ideally 120 fps, but I'm okay with saving up or possibly compromising if necessary. Any advice on CPUs and GPUs that are mid-range now? Thanks!

If you're aiming for 4K at 120 fps, you'll need a complete overhaul of your PC. Depending on the specs, a decent build could set you back around $2,000. Do you have a budget in mind?

4K120 is definitely ambitious, but scaling down a bit can help with cost and availability.

I don’t have a strict budget, but I’m up for saving a bit to get what I want. I might be okay with shooting for 4K at 90Hz if that’s more doable.

Right now, achieving 4K at 120 fps is quite tough for consumer builds. It's very dependent on your game settings and what you’re willing to compromise. A popular option is the 7800X3D paired with a 5070 Ti or 9070 XT. Look into those builds!

That’s helpful! I’ll check out the 7800X3D and 9070XT combo. Thanks for the tip!
