Help! My Brother-in-Law’s iPhone is Locked After an Accident

Hey everyone! I'm reaching out for some help. My brother-in-law recently got into a serious car accident, and in the aftermath, he tried to access his iPhone but it got locked. Now it just shows "iPhone unavailable" on the Home Screen, and the only options available are Emergency and Erase Phone.
The problem is that he doesn't remember his email password to receive a recovery code, nor does he recall his Apple ID password. We've been considering switching his SIM card into an old phone to at least get a text code from Apple, but beyond that, is there anything else we can do to unlock his phone and get it working again? I've honestly tried everything I can think of. I'm starting to think it may not be possible, but I wanted to ask for your advice just in case!

It sounds like he tried to unlock it multiple times which caused the lockout. A good reminder to have a password manager in situations like this! However, on a non-jailbroken iPhone, bypassing the passcode isn’t an option, and once you see the Security Lockout screen, the only route is to erase the phone.

Thank you for the tips! Unfortunately, he might not even remember where he got the phone given everything that’s happened. But I really appreciate the help, it’s definitely been a challenge sorting this all out!

Unfortunately, without the passwords, getting into the phone is really tough. If he can find proof of purchase for the phone, he might be able to reset it and regain access, but that also means he’ll lose all the data on it. You can try the Apple ID recovery page at iforgot.apple.com, but again, without those passwords, it’s going to be a hassle.

Do you know where he bought the phone? If it was from a well-known retailer or the Apple Store, he might be able to get a copy of the purchase receipt. Apple support can use that to verify ownership and possibly remove the lock. Just a heads up though, even if that works, all the data would still be lost unless he can access the Apple account and passcode.
