I've got a stubborn Chromebook that refuses to turn off no matter what I try. I've plugged it in, shaken it, tilted it, and I'm even considering unscrewing it! Unfortunately, I can't get it to show any signs of life. What are some realistic options I can try with just a screwdriver and no access to a repair shop? If I can't fix it, how can I retrieve the data stored on it?

I noticed this adhesive plastic piece on mine too! It's meant to be there, so don't remove it unless you really know what you're doing. It could be there to help with the internal battery or components. Most of the time, if you take those off, you might cause more issues. As for the data, if it’s not in the cloud, there should be an accessible hard drive, but getting into that would probably require a trip to a tech repair store.
First, try holding the power button for over 10 seconds, or even up to a minute. Sometimes that does the trick and can get it to power up normally. If it doesn't work, try unplugging any accessories connected to it, and then plug it into a working wall socket. Wait for about an hour to see if there are any lights. While it's plugged in, press the refresh and power buttons at the same time several times. Don't shake it too much, but if it rattles, something might be loose. I wouldn't recommended taking it apart unless you're knowledgeable about electronics. Also, check if your personal data might be stored in the cloud—if so, you may not lose anything unless the hard drive is damaged. If all else fails, a repair shop may be your best bet.
