Help! My CPU is Overheating at 100°C – What Should I Do?

Hey everyone,

I recently built my own PC and I'm facing a serious issue with overheating. My CPU, an i7-14700KF, is hitting alarming temperatures, even when I'm just moving my mouse around quickly. When I play games, it spikes up to 100°C, and that's just on Minecraft!

Here are my specs: ASRock Sonic motherboard, 7800XT GPU, a 750W PSU, and I've got two case fans alongside my Arctic 17CO CPU cooler. All the fans are set to max speed, and I've applied what I believe is enough thermal paste.

Does anyone have suggestions? I'm starting to wonder if the CPU itself is faulty. Also, I found this cooler, the Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE V2 - would that be a better option? Thanks! 🙂

It looks like that cooler you’re using isn’t really adequate for your CPU. The i7-14700KF can produce a lot of heat, so you’ll want a more powerful cooler. A good option would be a 360mm AIO or a hefty dual-tower cooler like the Thermalright Phantom Spirit. Your current setup might be manageable for basic tasks, but gaming will push it far beyond safe limits.

Thanks for the tip! I'll look into those options.

Yeah, definitely consider getting something more capable. Your CPU needs that extra cooling, especially if you're gaming!

Honestly, that cooler is just not up to the task here. If you can't fit a larger one in your case, you should really consider an AIO cooler. Even a dual tower cooler would work wonders. Check your case dimensions before you buy though to make sure it fits!

Trust me, don't skimp on the cooler. It’ll save you a lot of headaches down the line!

I appreciate the advice! Space is tight in my NZXT H500 case, so I'll definitely measure first.

Did you install your cooler correctly? Make sure you removed any protective films and applied thermal paste properly. This can make a big difference! If it's not seated right, it won't do its job effectively.

I followed the instructions, but I'll double-check everything to be safe. Thanks!

It’s worth inspecting again. Installation errors are frustrating but easy to fix!

Check the radiator on your cooler—if it’s only warm, it’s not doing its job. It could be that the cooler isn't mounted properly. 100°C is way too high, so don't run your PC until you get an adequate cooler installed. You might need to replace that setup soon!

Being proactive with this will save your CPU! Definitely take care before it gets worse.

Got it! I'll test the radiator and see if it’s doing its job. Thanks for the warning!
