I recently purchased a used Dell Latitude E6440 on eBay, and it ran great for a couple of months. However, now when I try to boot it up for class, nothing happens at all. I can hear some whirring sounds for a moment, but they fade away quickly. The only time pressing the power button seems to work is if I unplug the charger and plug it back in before trying to turn it on. This is really frustrating, and I have no idea what's going on!

Have you checked if you're still using the original battery? Sometimes, really old batteries can cause startup issues. If it's the same one from 12 years ago, it might be time to consider a replacement.
Whoa, it started smoking? That's alarming! If that happens again, you should definitely stop using that battery. It's not safe. It might be best to get a new battery and see if that resolves the issue.
That laptop is pretty old! I suggest unplugging the charger and removing the battery entirely. After that, hold down the power button for about 30 seconds. Reinsert the battery, plug the charger back in, and try turning it on with just a light tap. Let me know if that does the trick!
