Help! My i9-14900k is Overheating Even After Undervolting

I've recently had my first i9-14900k die after just 7 months, so after getting a replacement, I've been trying to manage the temperatures. I added a second fan to my Thermaltake ASTRIA 400 air cooler, installed a rear case fan, and put in three additional fans on top. Initially, that seemed to help, but while playing newer games, the temps shot back up to 100°C. I tried to undervolt by 0.15V, and noticed that when playing 'Clair Obscur', the GPU load dropped from 98% to about 60% with 2X AI-generated frames while CPU load increased slightly from 18-20% to 25-26%. Still, I find myself hitting 100°C and thermal throttling.

When I did the RMA and took off the cooler, the thermal paste looked well spread, and I confirmed there was no plastic film left. I also updated to the latest microcode for voltage stability, but I suspect there might be issues again, as the first one still died under load.

What can I adjust to reduce the heat without sacrificing too much performance? Should I undervolt more, or is that going to make the system unstable? Would lowering the clock multiplier help?

You really need a bigger cooler for the i9-14900k. I had a Scythe dual tower cooler on mine originally, and it still struggled with throttling at stock settings. Switching to a 360mm AIO completely fixed the issue for me. If you're concerned about liquid cooling failures, you might need to rethink that, because air cooling just isn't cutting it here.

Honestly, that cooler you're using is pretty small for a CPU like the i9-14900k, which is one of the hottest consumer CPUs out there. It's perfect for a CPU under 100W but won't handle this one well at all. I'd suggest going into the BIOS and disabling the PL2 limit entirely, and setting PL1 to around 65-80W. This should help with the overheating, but be aware that your performance will definitely take a hit.

It’s rated for 230W, so it should handle it, right?

Consider selling your 14900k and picking up a 14600k instead. Even with a larger dual tower, that gen runs really hot under load. If you choose to stick with the 14900k, just go for a big AIO cooler – it’s the only reliable way to keep up with that CPU without overheating.

I’ve got a 14600k and it barely cools down too. I wouldn't want to run air cooling on the 14700k either, as it sounds like it would definitely lead to throttling.

Have you tried adjusting the BIOS power limits? You should definitely be able to power limit it or enable eco mode so it doesn't create as much heat. Sometimes throttling is because it's too hot, and limiting power can actually improve performance since you won’t be thermal throttling.

I have those limits set to Intel's settings, but this CPU runs so hot... it's frustrating!
