Help! My Important Family Archive Disappeared After Using a Different Laptop

I have a 500GB Seagate Laptop HDD that I used to store 400GB of family archives and sensitive government-related data. Today, I connected the drive to an AMD laptop, but when I looked for my files, they seemed to be missing. The drive still shows that it has its full capacity used up, so I'm not sure what happened. How can I recover or access my data?

It sounds like the drive might have been formatted on a different system. If it originated from a Mac, that could lead to compatibility issues due to the different file systems. Check if the files are on a different partition or if they were marked as hidden during the transfer. You might want to try connecting it back to the original computer to see if they reappear there.

Exactly! I had a similar situation years ago when I helped my girlfriend with a USB that wouldn't work after she formatted it at her mom’s house on a Mac. We just had to get it back to her original computer to sort it out.

Also consider that it could be due to the Drive’s permission settings. If it’s an NTFS format, the new laptop might not have the required permissions to read the drive.

If your original laptop has Windows 11, there’s a chance that BitLocker encryption is enabled on your drive. Put it back in the original machine and check if that’s the case – you may need to turn off the encryption to access the files.

I had no idea encryption could cause such issues until I tried accessing some files on a different device. It’s a real headache sometimes!

If you’re dealing with sensitive government data, make sure you’re using a protected device when accessing it. It may also be encrypted if it contains classified information, in which case you'll need to go back to the original laptop or contact IT for help if it’s truly sensitive. Just be cautious about privacy.

Good point! I think the files might actually just be personal data, like tax info. Still, it’s vital to tread carefully, especially because of identity theft concerns.
