Help! My Keyboard Stopped Working After a Windows Update

I have an older laptop that was running fine until last night when it forced me to do a Windows update that I had been putting off. After I logged in, I noticed that my keyboard isn't functioning properly. Only the G and F keys seem to work, but when I press G, the number 5 appears, and when I press F, the letter G shows up. It doesn't seem completely broken, but I'm concerned that the update might have caused this. Unfortunately, I can't afford a new laptop right now, so I'm hoping for some help to fix this issue.

Before going too deep into fixes, just plug in a USB keyboard (maybe borrow one) and see if it works. If it does, you can buy a replacement keyboard on eBay for around $20. Make sure to look up your laptop's manual online for installation instructions. Just a heads up, replacement keyboards can sometimes be faulty, but usually, the sellers are good about sending a replacement if that happens.

It’s possible that the update didn't actually kill your keyboard. It might just be some mechanical issue or stuck keys. I’d suggest powering off your laptop, then pressing all the keys a few times—especially CTRL, ALT, and Shift. Also, try booting into safe mode or the BIOS to see if the keyboard works there. If it doesn’t, then it’s probably not the update's fault.

Have you thought about using the onscreen keyboard? Once you log in, you can reinstall the keyboard drivers as well. The issue could be physical with the keyboard itself.

I need a bit more info to help you out. What's the model of your laptop? Also, which version of Windows are you using? I’m assuming your laptop starts up fine. If you think the update messed up your keyboard, you could try using an external keyboard. That way, you can uninstall the update and see if that fixes the problem.

Have you tried using an external USB keyboard? That could help you diagnose if the issue is with your laptop's built-in keyboard.
