Help! My Linux Mint is So Slow – What Can I Do?

I recently switched from Windows 10 to Linux Mint, mainly because Windows 10 support is ending soon. My computer is a little old, but it handled Windows 10 just fine. I primarily used my PC for Discord and playing some older games like Age of Empires II HD and Heroes of the Storm, which ran without any issues thanks to my Nvidia GTX 680. However, since switching to Linux Mint, I've noticed that while I got Age of Empires working, it's running really slow. I can't even get Heroes of the Storm to start up at all! This switch to Linux was supposed to improve my performance, but it's been quite disappointing. Even downloading games on Steam is way slower than I expected, despite my gigabit internet connection. I'm currently using the latest version of Linux Mint with XFCE. If anyone has suggestions on how to make this run better, I'd really appreciate it! I've attached a picture of my system specs for reference.

It sounds like you're using the open-source 'nouveau' drivers, which aren't great for gaming. You should install the Nvidia proprietary drivers. Just go to the driver manager, select the recommended driver, and install it. After that, reboot your PC. Once it's back on, open a terminal and type `nvidia-smi` to check if the installation was successful.

I had a similar experience when I first switched. I started with Linux Cinnamon and had no luck with the drivers either. Switching to XFCE helped a bit since it's lighter, but I still faced issues getting Steam to work right because of the 32-bit software dependency errors. It definitely seems like driver issues are a common problem, but it can be tricky to sort out. Good luck getting it all working!

After installing the Nvidia driver, I ran into an error that said I failed to get adapter display mode. You might want to check if you have Secure Boot enabled. If you do, you might need to disable it because it can prevent the GPU driver from loading correctly. That could fix your issue!
