Hey everyone, I've been facing some serious overheating issues with my 2019 Intel MacBook Air. I mainly use it for school, which means I usually have around 5 to 15 tabs open at a time. Recently, even with just Chrome running, the fans are always at maximum speed and the CPU and GPU temperatures are hitting around 100 degrees Celsius (212°F)! This happens daily, and the performance drops significantly, making it super frustrating to use. I've tried using Mac Fan Control which shows the fans spinning at 8000 rpm, but nothing seems to help. Is there anything I can do to fix this, or am I looking at needing a new laptop?

It's true that the older Intel Macs can struggle under load, and moving to the M-series has made a big difference for many. If you’re considering a new laptop soon for engineering, it might be worth saving up for one of the newer models instead of investing in fixing the old one now.
You’re right about Chrome being a big resource consumer. If possible, try to use Safari for most things, and keep Chrome for when you absolutely need it. Also, check if Chrome can suspend background tabs with an extension to reduce the load. What’s the RAM situation? If you’re running a lot of tabs, 8GB might not be cutting it anymore. Let me know if you find other apps exacerbate the issue!
Yeah, Chrome is definitely a resource hog on Macs! One thing you might try is cleaning the vents with a can of compressed air; dust buildup can really slow down the fans. Another option is to consider a cooling pad for your Mac. They can help with cooling, but just be cautious with long-term use. If things don't improve, taking it to a repair shop to replace thermal pads might help as well.
