Help! My NVMe SSD Got Stuck During CHKDSK – What Should I Do Next?

I ran CHKDSK on my NVMe SSD with the /r option because it started crashing and freezing. Unfortunately, it got stuck on stage 4 for hours, and when I shut it down, I'm now unable to read from the SSD or access the command prompt without it freezing again. I've been upgrading my PC for the last five years without doing a fresh install, and I suspect my Windows installation might be corrupted. I also tried using the system file scan command without success. I have a new Samsung 990 Pro, and I wonder if I should put it in an enclosure to retrieve data or if that's even an option. I thought about booting from my laptop's SSD and then wiping the 990 Pro, but I'm not sure if that's feasible. Any advice on what I should do next?

Before you completely give up, check if you can run Samsung's diagnostic software on the SSD. There have been issues with the 990 Pro, particularly firmware bugs that cause overheating. If you can access the diagnostics, it may provide insight into the drive's health. If you do decide to go for a replacement, I would recommend using the warranty to get it fixed, that’s your best bet!

Just a heads-up, using the /r option can be intense for SSDs since it stresses the drive's controller, which could lead to freezes. If it won't boot into Windows or get past the recovery screen, there's a good chance it might not be recoverable. If you get your hands on a fitting enclosure, try to get some data off it while you still can, but keep in mind that a new drive might be your only long-term solution.

It sounds like your drive might be toast. I suggest replacing it, as trying to recover it could be more hassle than it's worth. Make sure to check if it's under warranty, as Samsung offers a five-year warranty on the 990 Pro. Send it back and they’ll likely re-flash it for you—just be prepared for a wait. In the meantime, focus on making backups of any data you can retrieve before you lose access entirely.
