Help! My PC Keeps Shutting Down When Pushing GPU Limits – What’s the Fix?

Hey folks! I just built a new PC with an Asus Astral RTX 5090, a 9800x3d CPU, and a be quiet! 1300W PSU. I've been experiencing frustrating full shutdowns (no blue screen, just power loss) during intense GPU loads, like launching Cyberpunk with ray tracing enabled. Here's what I've done so far: I ran several synthetic stress tests without any issues; all temps were good during both testing and gaming. I found that limiting or undervolting the GPU helped reduce shutdowns, and plugging my setup directly into the wall instead of using my Magnus Pro XL outlet also reduced the problem significantly. These issues mainly occur with brief, sharp GPU demands rather than sustained loads. After those adjustments, I had one shutdown while trying to max settings in Cyberpunk, but other games were fine. My theory is that my 10A-rated extension cord might be causing power delivery problems. I've also chatted with ChatGPT about getting a UPS for better power stability. Does this sound plausible, and would investing in a UPS like the APC SMT2200IC likely solve my problem? I'm a bit skeptical about relying on AI advice, so I'd appreciate some expert opinions!

Hey there! Sounds like you've done a lot of troubleshooting already. Just a heads-up, if you're experiencing sudden shutdowns with no error logs, it often points to a power supply issue or a problem with the outlet. Your be quiet! PSU is great, but you might want to check its model as some can have faults under certain loads. I've seen similar cases where upgrading the power cord or using a proper UPS really helped stabilize things. Definitely try to find a slightly stronger power source if you can, especially if you're embarking on power-hungry tasks.

Thanks for the input! It's the dark power pro 13 and I’m running it in single rail mode. Do you think I should look for a new PSU or just try the UPS first?

I’d suggest the UPS first since it can filter power issues and provide stable delivery. If the problem persists, then considering a PSU upgrade could be the next step.

I completely relate to your frustration! It sounds like you might have an overcurrent protection (OCP) triggering on your PSU if the extension cord can't handle all your equipment. Those higher-end GPUs can draw quite a bit of power, especially at peak loads. If you’re stuck with this cord, it’s possible that it's limiting the power your PSU is getting. Make sure to test different outlets too. A UPS like the one you're looking at should help alleviate some of these power spikes and drop risks.

That makes sense! I think I'll go ahead and get that UPS. Hopefully, it'll sort out the power delivery issues.

Definitely worth a shot! Just keep an eye on your system after you connect it.
