Help! My phone fell in water and won’t charge, what should I do?

I accidentally dropped my iPhone 14 Pro in water last night. Thankfully, it seems to be working fine otherwise, but now when I plug it in, it just won't charge at all. There's no indication of water damage or anything like that; it's completely unresponsive. I even used a vibrating YouTube video to try to shake the water out of the speakers, but I didn't think to do anything about the charging port. I have a wireless charging pad and I've let it charge overnight with the charging port facing down, but this morning it's still not charging with the cable. Should I just be patient and keep waiting?

There’s probably still moisture in the Lightning port or the charging circuitry. Avoid forcing a wired charger for at least 24 to 48 hours and let it completely dry out. Using wireless charging should be okay, just be cautious not to let it overheat. Blowing air gently into the port or using compressed air from a safe distance might help. If there's still no response after it's dry, you might need to visit an Apple Store or a repair shop for help.

It sounds like water might have shorted the charging circuitry. Just remember, water resistance decreases over time as seals wear out. If you don't have AppleCare+, that's unfortunate. Keep an eye on it, though; water exposure, especially to the battery, can be dangerous.

Keep on using the wireless charger and don't push the cable in forcefully. Any moisture left in the port can prevent charging. Let it dry out for about 24 to 48 hours before trying again. If it still doesn’t work after that, you may need to consider getting it checked by Apple.

Rice isn't very effective; silica gel packs actually work a lot better to absorb moisture. If you have some, you can seal your phone with them overnight and stick to wireless charging until the port fully dries out. Don’t force the plug in too early; you might risk damaging it.

You might have some residue or obstruction in the charging port. A common fix is to take a cut business card, dip it in 70% isopropyl alcohol, and gently clean the port a few times. Look out for any discoloration or dirt while doing this. You could also try a toothpick to get any lint out. This issue often arises with lightning connectors.
