I recently got an Amazon Fire TV from a friend and decided to factory reset it since it was linked to their account. After the reset, it prompted me to press the home button on the remote to continue, but the remote I received doesn't have a home button. I bought a universal remote that does have a home button, but it still won't connect. I even tried getting an Amazon Fire-specific remote; it can turn the TV on and off, but it won't pair. I'm running out of ideas since I've checked manuals and Googled solutions, but nothing has worked. I could really use some advice!

Sounds like you might have been given the wrong remote, possibly an Echo remote instead of a Fire TV remote. Check out some troubleshooting guides from Amazon; they might help you figure out the pairing issue. Here are a couple of links that could be useful:

I looked at the remote that came with the TV, and it seems like it closely resembles the 'Menu' or 'TV' button, but doesn’t have the expected layout. I tried following those troubleshooting tips provided, yet my screen remains on 'Searching for remote' for hours at a time. I've even removed all batteries and disabled my phone's Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, but no luck.
