Hey everyone! I'm having a frustrating issue with my RX 6800 XT where the screen randomly goes black while I'm gaming, and I hear a loud buzzing sound through my speakers. Once that happens, my system freezes up, and I have to do a hard reset to get it back online.
This problem is occurring in both heavy titles like Expedition 33 and Horizon Forbidden West, as well as lighter games where my GPU temperatures are pretty low (under 55°C). So it's not about the load or overheating.
Here are the troubleshooting steps I've already taken:
- My BIOS is up-to-date (Gigabyte B460M Aorus Pro).
- I checked Event Viewer and found no minidumps or any critical events.
- Did stress tests with FurMark (scored 11,400) and the OCCT VRAM test—both passed with no issues.
- Ran Windows Memory Diagnostic—no errors reported.
- Tried various AMD drivers (25.5.1, 25.4.1, 25.3.1, and 24.12.1), but they all crashed; only 25.4.1 and 25.6.1 let me hear game music during the black screen, but after reboot, the computer said those drivers weren't recognized for my GPU.
My system specs are:
- OS: Windows 11 24H2
- GPU: Gigabyte RX 6800 XT (undervolted via Adrenalin)
- CPU: Intel i5-10400
- Motherboard: Gigabyte B460M Aorus Pro
- RAM: 2x8GB Corsair 2666MHz DDR4, XMP enabled
- PSU: Cooler Master MWE Bronze V2 750W (2 years old)
- Monitor: 75Hz, connected via HDMI
I also want to note that there's no coil whine or odd PSU noise, and the system is otherwise stable and performs normally outside of gaming. I've been dealing with this issue for weeks and would really appreciate any help!

As a fellow RX 6800 user, I’d suggest trying to disable FreeSync, Enhanced Sync, and Anti Lag if they're turned on. One of those fixed a similar issue for me, so it might work for you too!
Have you tried running your GPU without the undervolt? Sometimes that can cause stability issues, especially if the tuning isn't perfect. Also, how many cables are you using to power the GPU?
Yes, I went back to defaults for a bit, but the crashes still happened. I'm using two power cables, and they look fine.
I actually tried that first, but unfortunately, the problem is still there. Appreciate the advice though!
