I'm reaching out because my brother recently passed away, and I have his iPad. He had a troubled history with mental health issues, and he was constantly changing his Apple ID and associated email due to paranoia. I really want to access his iPad to read a poignant eulogy he wrote for our mom, who also passed away recently. I don't know what email or Apple ID he was using, and while I assume I'll need to provide a death certificate, I'm uncertain about the specifics Apple requires to prove the iPad is his and allow access. Has anyone faced a similar situation? What might Apple need from me to assist with this?

I'm really sorry to hear about your loss. Unfortunately, Apple doesn't have a simple way to unlock devices or recover data. You will likely need a death certificate and possibly a court order, depending on your local laws. Check their official support page for more details: https://support.apple.com/en-us/102431
I empathize with your situation. You may be able to get into your brother's Apple account to find some documents. However, direct access to the iPad's data might be tricky. Again, check this page for guidance: https://support.apple.com/en-us/102431
Thank you for the support! Let's hope they can help us.
I'm really sorry for your loss. What does the iPad display? Is it on the passcode screen, or has it locked you out completely? If it's just asking for a passcode, you might still have a chance. Apple can't bypass a passcode, so if it says 'iPad unavailable,' your only option would be to wipe it. They might help you access the Apple account if you know any details like the email or phone number linked to it.
It's still showing the passcode option. I'm hoping something in his belongings might give me a clue about the code. But I'm not too optimistic.

Thanks for your insight! I figured it wouldn't be straightforward, but hopefully, we can get access to that eulogy.
