I'm using an Asus x705u with an i5 8250 processor, and I'm trying to figure out if I can use a PCIe 3 SSD in my laptop. I've looked up the specifications and noticed that most x705 models have two NVMe slots, but it's unclear whether those slots support PCIe 3.0 or not. I'm not very knowledgeable about SSD technology, so I might be missing some details.

If your laptop has an NVMe slot, it will definitely work since it's backwards compatible. However, if it's a SATA slot, then it won't be compatible with PCIe SSDs.
Since you have an 8xxx series CPU, it only supports PCIe 3. So, if you get a PCIe 4 or even PCIe 5 SSD, it should still work because PCIe is forward compatible. You're good to go!
I have a Kingston 512G NVMe PCIe SSD. Is it PCIe 3.0? How can I tell?
