How can I confirm that this malware is completely removed?

My father accidentally downloaded a file named "operagxsetup.exe" while visiting a sketchy sports site with lots of pop-up ads. I quickly deleted the file, but I'm unsure if it downloaded and ran automatically without my knowledge. After deleting it, I ran an antivirus scan and it reported no issues. I cleared all Microsoft Edge data as well. The strange part is that the file didn't appear in the recycling bin and just seems to have vanished. I'm really worried that it might still be lurking somewhere. What should I do to know if the malware is truly gone?

Booting up in safe mode and running another scan can help catch anything that might be trying to hide. If nothing shows up there, you’ll likely be in the clear!

Got it, thanks for the tip!

Generally, files don’t just execute by themselves without some sort of user action. You’re probably safe, but to be extra sure, I recommend running the built-in Windows antivirus again. Just to cover all bases!

I did run it, and nothing came up. I'm still worried that it might be hidden!
