I'm trying to connect a couple of older DVD players that I inherited from my uncle to my laptop since I have some CDs that I want to play. The power supply (SMPS) is already on, but I'm not sure how to determine whether the problem lies with the DVD player itself, the data cable, or something else. I want to avoid wasting money on a new data cable, so any guidance on how to troubleshoot this would be greatly appreciated!

Just to clarify, are you working with a DVD drive or a full DVD player? If it's a full player, connecting it to a laptop isn't really straightforward since most DVD players aren’t made for that.
It might actually be simpler and more cost-effective to just get an external DVD drive for around $20. If you already have the players, though, I see your point about wanting to try and connect them first.
First, check if the drive spins up when you turn it on. If it does, that's a good sign! But if it doesn't, that might indicate an issue with the player itself.
