I'm looking for a free and reliable way to convert my .heic photos and videos to .jpg/.jpeg and .mp4 formats. I want to keep my iPhone's photos safe for a long time, like decades, on an external hard drive, and I believe using jpg and mp4 is the best choice since they are so universally accepted. Plus, who knows if iPhones will still exist by then? I need to convert around ten thousand files, and I prefer to use software that works offline because I want to avoid uploading my photos to random websites.

You can convert HEIC to JPG for free using Preview on your Mac! Just drag the HEIC files into Preview, go to the file menu, and select 'Convert to JPG'. I've done this so many times, it's super straightforward!
You should definitely check out IrfanView! It's free and has a fantastic batch converter feature. Plus, it's probably the best image viewer I've ever come across.
IrfanView is great, but does anyone know if it can manage 10,000 photos without a hitch?
If you're using Linux, you can easily convert files using the command "mogrify -format jpg *.heic". Just make sure to adjust for HEIC file names if they come from iOS; you might need to capitalize it.
If you're into online tools, I have a site that might help: pufomi.com/en/image/heic-to-jpg/. You can convert up to 100 files at a time. Just keep an eye on color accuracy since I've had my share of issues with color profiles.

Totally agree! IrfanView is like the VLC for image editing—it's been reliable for so long. Just gotta make sure it handles all those files offline!
