How can I effectively use two iPhones, one for travel?

I have an iPhone 14 on AT&T and an old unlocked iPhone 11 that I've erased. I want to use the iPhone 11 for international travel with eSIMs. My goal is to keep the 11 as minimal as possible, mainly just for essential travel and communication apps, while avoiding any sharing of pictures between the two phones. I'd like to maintain my contacts and messages without auto-syncing everything from the iPhone 14. What's the best way to set up iCloud to prevent automatic syncing, especially for photos?

I’m curious, what’s the reason behind wanting to use two iPhones like this?

Well, non-US citizens can face phone searches when entering the US. Given the current political climate, I think it's a smart move to keep things separated.

Remember that iCloud is a syncing service. If both your devices have iCloud activated, they will sync everything. So, it's crucial to not enable iCloud Photos on the 11 if you want to keep your photos separate.

No worries! It’s not a dumb question at all. iCloud can be tricky, especially if you haven't dealt with it much in the last few years. Good luck!

You can keep the iPhone 11 from syncing photos by turning off iCloud Photos on that device. This way, your pictures won't automatically show up on the 11. Just manage your contacts and messages separately if you want to keep them synced without dealing with the photo issue.

To prevent any photos from syncing, turn off iCloud entirely on the 11. When you get back from your travels, upload your pictures to your Mac instead. If you’re worried about losing them, consider using a free Google Drive account for some extra safety.
