How Can I Find the Source of an Unsecured WiFi Network?

I've come across an unsecured WiFi network named something like 'JOHN', and the signal is always strong. There's no one nearby that I can identify as the owner, and this network has been around for months. I'm curious if I can connect to it and discover what devices are connected, or if there's a cost-effective way to locate the source physically. Any ideas on how to track it down?

You should check out an app called 'Fing'. It can show you which devices are connected to the network, which is easier than playing a guessing game with network names. Just connect and see what pops up!

That worked out for me! Great suggestion for another project too!

To find the source, you might need a directional WiFi antenna to help triangulate where the signal is coming from. You can even use something like a Pringles can as a makeshift antenna. Just do a little Googling for tips on that!

Thanks for the tip!

It might be something like a smart appliance that's trying to connect to its app instead of a traditional network. This could explain why there isn't a typical owner around. Just a thought!

You know, I considered that but didn't think of anything specific. I just remembered something that fits! Thanks for the nudge!

Look into an app called 'WiFi Analyzer'. It’ll give you details about the signal strength. Walk around with it to see how the signal fluctuates; it should help you narrow down the location!

That app is awesome! It definitely helped me target the signal.

Have you checked if it could be related to utility companies, like water, gas, or electric? Sometimes they have networks set up for their devices.
