How can I get a ready-to-use gaming PC for my son?

Hi everyone! I'm completely out of my depth when it comes to technology and gaming systems. My son has been asking for a gaming PC for his birthday, so I went ahead and got what I thought was a desktop, but it turned out to be a small box featuring an AMD Ryzen 9 7900X processor. The sales guy at Best Buy was super enthusiastic about building a computer with this. I really have no clue about how any of this works. Can I just buy a gaming PC that's ready to go? What are these called? Is it still considered a desktop? I confess, I'm old school and not very tech-savvy. Also, if building one is an option, how hard is it really? Please share your wisdom with a mom trying to make her gamer son happy! 🙏

Yes, you can definitely buy a complete gaming computer, often referred to as a 'prebuilt.' For good recommendations, check out the prebuilts section online! By the way, what you got is just a CPU, which is only one part of the entire setup. You might want to return it and go for a complete system instead.

Thanks! Should I look for those prebuilt PCs at a regular store or maybe a local gaming store?

Oh man, I feel you! I would have loved a gaming PC back in the day. You’re looking for ‘prebuilts’—lots of options out there. Check online stores like Newegg, Best Buy, or Microcenter. Just a heads up, it can be tricky to find one with all decent parts. Sometimes they only have one or two good components and the rest are subpar, all dressed up with RGB lights to make them look fancy.

Oh great! I just asked that above, thanks for the heads up! Could you give me an example of basic spec requirements?
